A House on Bretten's Marquet Square Full of History
Emperor Charles V stayed here overnight ...
Beautiful timber frames, window and door frames made of sandstone as well as a charming historic market square envision what life was once like. This story will give you more insight into the history of Hotel Krone. It all started around 500 years ago in the Middle Ages when travellers needed a shelter. Of course, back then, there was no such comfort as a modern "Ambience Room" with a rainbow shower. However, the accommodation seemed to have been equipped with quite some amenities, otherwise there wouldn't have been such an outstanding guest as the Emperor Charles V himself. He stayed at Hotel Krone on June 27, 1550 and it is said that the host back then was one of the wealthiest men in town. The emperor and his son had been on their way to the "Reichstag" in Augsburg dragging along the Elector Johann Friedrich of Saxony as their captive accompanied by approx. 5,000 soldiers. It wasn't the only time that mundane and spiritual princes used Bretten as their place to stay overnight - the town was on the way of the great long-distance route from western to northwestern Europe towards the Danube region and to Italy.
From 1570 onwards, our house was managed by the well-respected, educated Paravicini Family. From this family derived several innkeeper and one mayor granting them a special place in Bretten's history. You can still see the Paravicini Family's coat of arms at the restaurant entrance - we are very proud of the achievements of our predecessors! It was also the Paravicini Family who rebuilt the house after it had been destroyed along with the rest of the town in 1689. Since 1999, the families "Weishäupl" and "Jäger" have been the "new" hotel hosts and we are very happy and well-aware of this challenge - to lead such a historic house into the future!
